Snoring can be a real problem, and not always for the person who is doing the snoring. If your partner or spouse is bothered by it to the point where they can’t sleep, you may have to sleep in another room or find a way to stop snoring.
Snoring can also be a sign that you might have a condition called sleep apnea, which would call for your to have a sleep test to discover your condition in that area.
Sleep apnea can actually be dangerous, because it causes you to stop breathing many times during the night because your tongue and your throat closed in on itself. It is preceded by a snore, so it can be confused as being minor or as being sleep apnea.
There are many devices that are for sale on the internet, at various stores and what not, but you can spend lots of money on devices that may or may not work for you. The best thing to do is to see your doctor and have an evaluation done, and perhaps the physician can recommend the proper device for you.
Most of the devices simply re-position the jaw when you sleep, thus opening up the breathing airway more when you sleep. When we fall asleep, the throat tends to relax a little more, so as we inhale the air to breathe as we sleep, the very back skin and throat muscles will vibrate, creating the snoring noise.
Anti-snoring aids come in the form of chinstraps, mouthpieces, special pillows, nasal devices and CPAP machines. The CPAP machine is designed specifically for people who have sleep apnea, as it forces air down the breathing airway, keeping the throat open so the flesh does not drop against the opposite side of a person’s throat.
The simplest type of device is the mouthpiece, as it will fix the jaw into a position where the airway remains open while a person sleeps.
For some people, that is a real nuisance, so there are mouthpieces that leave the teeth slightly open and the tongue can extend out leaving a bigger passageway.
Another popular device is the snoring chinstrap device. It works in a similar fashion as the mouthpiece in that it positions the jaw so that there is a constant airway present. Like the mouthpiece, the chinstrap can be tried on before buying.
Just be sure that what ever device you choose is comfortable and that you can breath in the right manner when you are using it.
